Foyn Harbour

This day in history 1916:_ Frank Wild and other members of the crew of Endurance
arrived in London (England) to announce that the scientific results of the unsuccessful expedition were considerable.

Our first wake-up call from Julio confirmed to those of us who were already awake
and outside, that the temperature had dropped slightly. It was -3*C and rather windy,
the decks were slippery, but what a sight greeted us !

Blue skies with a smattering of clouds, the crispness of the snow covered mountains surrounding us was too much to take in all at once.

After breakfast our first two groups, ‘Ross’ and “Amundsen’ followed later by Shackleton and Scott made their way to the mud-room to board our 'zods' to go in closer around Foyn Harbour at Enterprise Island in Wilhelimina Bay.

We made our way through the icebergs and the brash ice and cruised along the cliffs of Enterprise Island where we passed a number of Blue-eyed shags waiting on snow hoping for it to melt in order to build their nest for the short season ahead.

As we moved further in we came across a whaling factory ship, the Gouvernoren, that had been scuttled on the shoreline in order to evacuate the men after the ship had caught fire.

All the whalers survived this emergency but lost their oil and ship.

It was great driving around all the different icebergs, looking at all the different shapes and sizes and the deep blue colours of the ice.

What a sight to look around 360 degrees and see the mountains of the Gerlache Strait.
